The Power of Formative Assessment
One-day course presented by Shirley Clarke M.Ed., Hon. Doc
The Lancashire Assessment Team are delighted to offer the opportunity to attend this one day conference led by one of the country's leading Educational Experts in the area of formative assessment.
Shirley Clarke is an internationally known expert in formative assessment. She works with teams of teachers every year evaluating formative assessment strategies linked with research findings to evolve the practical applications of formative assessment. Her many publications and presentations have enabled teachers across the world to have access to research and practical tried and tested strategies. Her work has had a major influence on practice in schools across the UK and beyond.
A former primary teacher in England, Shirley went on to become a mathematics adviser, a test writer and then an academic at the Institute of Education, University of London, during which time she conducted a number national research projects looking at the impact of testing on teachers and students. She was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2007.
Shirley’s publications, with a number of translations, are worldwide best sellers because they combine research with practice in a tried and tested, accessible way. She has added to the support for teachers by capturing video of teachers in action, and now has over 140 high quality clips on her website video platform (www.shirleyclarke-education.org). Seeing formative assessment in action by excellent teachers is a powerful way of communicating its impact and use.

7 Aspects of engagement pilot: qualitative evaluation
This evaluation report was produced by IFF Research, working in partnership with Dr. Debs Robinson (University of Derby). It looks at the use of the 7 aspects of engagement as a summative assessment tool at the end of key stages 1 and 2 for pupils who are working below the level of the national curriculum and not involved in subject-specific study.
The pilot ran from January to July 2018 and involved 55 primary schools. Please click here to read the report.

Following the government's review of statutory assessment arrangements for pupils in primary schools working below the standard of national curriculum assessments, the following changes have been made for 2018/19 onwards:
Pupils engaged in subject-specific study
The interim pre-key stage standards have been extended and must be used for statutory assessment at the end of KS1 and KS2 for pupils working below the standard of national curriculum assessments engaged in subject-specific study. Please note – the PIVATS P Scale milestones are still relevant for ongoing formative assessment and for in-school summative assessments.
Pupils not engaged in subject-specific study
The government is piloting the approach set out in the Rochford Review's recommendations for assessing pupils not engaged in subject-specific study against the 7 aspects of engagement for cognition and learning. These changes will not take place before the 2019/20 academic year.
In the interim, P scales 1-4 must continue to be used for this group of pupils for the 2018/19 academic year. Once the findings have been clarified, the PIVATS team will review the PIVATS P Scale milestones.

Regarding the above changes, the PIVATS team have received many enquiries as to whether or not PIVATS continues to be a viable assessment tool. The answer to this is affirmative. In response to concerns regarding the statutory requirements of assessing against the pre-key stage standards, the PIVATS team have produced the following guidance.

KS1 Test Analysis Framework

2018 Statutory Test KS2 Timetable
The KS2 test timetable for week commencing 14 May 2018 is published in the 2018 Assessment and Reporting Arrangements (ARA) by the Standards & Testing Agency (STA). The DfE have recently published some information about the timetable which differs from the information printed by STA. Please note there is an error on the DfE publication, so please ensure you follow the STA 2018 Assessment and Reporting Arrangement timetable.

Key Stage 1 Conversion Tables 2017
Teachers mark the KS1 tests and calculate the raw scores each pupil achieves for each test. To convert raw scores to scaled scores, you need to use the conversion tables.

KLIPs Exemplification for:-

Mathematics Years 1-6
KLIPs exemplification has now been completed for reading and writing and mathematics for Years 1 – 6 and can now be ordered. The primary purpose of this resource is to provide an aid to teachers when using the Lancashire KLIPs assessment materials, when making judgements in a more summative way (i.e. summing up at the end of a period of time). As Lancashire KLIPs are aligned to the national curriculum, they may also help schools in considering wider issues such as appropriate pitch against the new NC expectations. In addition, they will provide a touch stone for reference when teachers are taking part in their own internal and external moderation activities, for example local cluster moderation. You can order the English and mathematics exemplification separately.
