Previously, NQTs could only undertake short term supply(placements of less than one calendar term) for 16 months, plus an additional 12 months if an Appropriate Body deemed that 'exceptional circumstances' applied to justify granting an extension.
Since 1st September 2012, NQTs who gained QTS on or after 1 September 2007 can undertake short-term supply work of less than one term in a 'relevant school' for a maximum period of 5 years from the point of award of QTS.
It is important to note that an NQT does not lose their Qualified Teacher Status at the end of this five years. They may still undertake inductable work in a 'relevant school'. They can continue short term supply in an independent school/free school/academy, where the requirement for induction does not apply.
They can also work part-time as a short-term supply teacher, if concurrently serving induction in another part-time post (the short-term supply post will not count towards induction).
