Natural fibres such as cotton, wool and silk fibres come from plants and animals. The tie in mystery object was made of silk. These silk fibres are made by silk worms. The worm uses the fibres to make a cocoon.
Man-made fibres are also used to make ties. These do not occur naturally and examples of these fibres are viscose and acetate. Synthetic fibres are made entirely from chemicals such as oil and coal.
