Brookfield Park Primary School, Skelmersdale

Miss Paula Evans

School context:

Brookfield Park is an average sized primary school (240+24 Nursery) which is result of an amalgamation of two well established primary schools (September 2004). It serves a socially and economically deprived area. Pupils’ attainment on entry to the Nursery is well below average. The vast majority of pupils are of white heritage. The number of pupils who take free school meals (22%) and the proportion with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are above average (45%).

The majority of teaching staff have been in teaching less than 10 years. There is a very strong leadership team within the school. Teaching and learning is also very well supported by a large team of support staff.

School achieved below floor targets in 2006 and felt school would benefit greatly from ISP practices.

School Data:

Prior to ISP KS2 targets were below floor targets with poor CVA particularly boys higher achieving learners. Writing across whole school poor.

End of the first year of ISP school exceeded its targets for maths and English and is now ranked in top 48% of all schools for CVA.

Best bits: our successes

  • Increased accountability of staff for year on year progress and increased accountability on Team Leaders;
  • Raised expectations of all staff;
  • Regular monitoring of pupil progress and the need to accelerate learning;
  • Access to high quality training through ISP Consultant which led to increased knowledge and skills of staff;
  • Use of brickwall tracker to monitor progress in year groups, KSs and Whole School;
  • Curricular targets becoming ‘Steps to Success’ and put into child friendly speak;
  • Concentrating on basic writing and maths skills for setting curricular targets.
