Consultancy and School Based Training

English Consultancy and School-based training for schools and other agencies can be tailored to meet the needs of individual members of staff, groups of staff, or the whole school staff team.

These can be delivered by members of our English team on a full-day, half-day, staff meeting or an evening twilight basis.

Advice and support can be provided across a range of topics including:

· Improving subject knowledge (eg Phonics, Spelling, Reading, Writing, Visual Literacy)

· Support for the Literacy Subject Leader

· Assessment for Learning

· Use of Assessment and SATs analysis to support target setting

· Developing monitoring and evaluation strategies

· Cross-curricular literacy

· Literacy Planning

Sue Dean - Senior Primary Literacy Consultant

Sue began work as a qualified teacher in Lancashire in 1991. She taught at Casterton Primary School in Burnley, initially working with pupils in Key Stage 1 but then working primarily with upper Key Stage 2. Through her work as a Leading Teacher, Sue was able to further develop her expertise in teaching English before joining the Literacy Team as a Consultant in May 2002.

Following a spell as acting Deputy Headteacher at Barrowford Primary School, Sue rejoined the Literacy Team to become Senior Consultant.

In 2006, Sue gained NPQH and in 2010 became an accredited Local Consultant for Improvement in Stronger Management Systems and Support for Writing. Sue has a particular interest in improving writing, able, gifted and talented pupils and teaching children with English as an additional language.

Helen Atkinson - Primary Literacy Consultant

Helen started her teaching career in Wigan, moving to Lancashire in 1985. She has taught in a wide range of primary schools, coordinating a number of subjects and gaining teaching experience in every year group.

Before joining the Literacy team, she was a member of the senior management team in a Preston primary school, where she was initially KS1 leader, then Phase 3 Leader, with responsibility for Student mentoring and Literacy. She further developed her skills in Literacy through working first as a Leading Literacy teacher, then as an Associate Consultant.

Helen also works with the Assessment team as a KS1 Moderator, and is a Literacy Consultant and a Teacher Advisor for Learning Excellence, supporting schools, running courses and providing consultancies.

Edwina Maskell - Primary Literacy Consultant

Edwina taught for eighteen years across the primary age range in Wiltshire, Norfolk and Lancashire. She also spent several years teaching in a large international school in the Middle East. She has been a Literacy Co-ordinator, Leading Numeracy and Literacy Teacher and, as Curriculum Leader, a member of the senior management team in a Preston school.

Edwina joined the Literacy Team in 2002. In addition to her work in supporting schools with teaching, learning and literacy , she has jointly led Lancashire projects on Reading, Creativity and Boys' Writing . She also produces a wide range of resources to support children's independent learning. She has special responsibility for reading, the newsletter and the website.

Nicola Martin - Primary Literacy Consultant

Nicola has spent fourteen years in Lancashire working as a primary teacher, senior manager and consultant. She joined the Literacy team in May 2004 after several years as a leading literacy teacher and subject leader and has been involved in co-developing and presenting the very popular boys' writing projects in KS2.

Nicola has a particular interest in the use of film to develop literacy and has gained Lead Practitioner status with the British Film Institute.

In 2009, Nicola was awarded NPQH and in 2010 became an accredited Local Consultant for Improvement in Stronger Management Systems and Support for Writing. Nicola specialises in improving writing, boys' writing and ICT.

Anita Yearsley - Primary Literacy Consultant

Anita Yearsley started her teaching career in the South East where she taught for ten years across a range of primary and middle schools in Surrey and Croydon, co-ordinating several subjects including Literacy and also working part-time as an ICT advisory teacher.

For the last 21 years she has taught in both Cumbria and Lancashire. Whilst working in Cumbria she was deputy head of a medium sized primary school and during this time was seconded for a term as Teacher fellow for English at St Martins College. She also spent three years working as an Advisory teacher for Literacy and Maths, and as a Literacy Consultant in Cumbria.

She then worked as deputy headteacher at Westgate Primary School, Morecambe, during which time she also spent a year as Acting Head at a small school, in addition to carrying out work as an Associate Literacy Consultant.

She has been a Literacy Consultant and a Teacher Advisor for Learning Excellence for the last four years, supporting schools, running courses and providing consultancies.
