Walled garden.
The 'walled garden' is the most restrictive and the safest for children to use. All the sites available on this list have been reviewd by our team here; hence this list is considrered to be 100% safe. Many schools are finding it to be too restrictive; unfortunately this filter does not permit the use of on-line search engines.
If there are sites that are not currently available in the walled garden that you feel should be then please send the URL's of these sites to webmaster@lancsngfl.ac.uk. Assuming that they are safe we will grant access to them.
Smartfilter
'Smartfilter' is the intermediate filter. Compared to the walled garden this offers a sizeable improvement on the number of sites it allows access to, BUT there is a chance that some undesirable sites will penetrate its screening process. Smartfilter works by restricting access to sites that have been identified as inappropriate (red list approach). Which means new/not yet discovered websites, containing inappropriate material, will be accessible; hence it is NOT 100% safe! Therefore, schools with smartfilter access should only permit pupils to use the internet under close supervision, and are advised to restrict pupils to child friendly search engines so to avoid accidental exposure!

Unrestricted
No filtering - able to access everything on the web except sites which have been restricted by the ICT Centre.
What to do if you find an inappropriate site that isn't restricted!
Make a note of the website's address, and email it directly to webmaster@lancsngfl.ac.uk. If possible please include a short sentence, outlining the reason(s) why you consider the site to be inappropriate. We will restrict access to it within one working day.
