Using and Applying Mathematics
The skills of using and applying mathematics involve the organisation of thinking, the selection of ideas and strategies to try and the confidence to determine if these ideas and strategies will actually work.
Using and applying mathematics needs to be embedded into the teaching and learning of all aspects of mathematics. Children need to be encouraged and supported to see how different strands can be combined into linked chains of calculations, decisions, reasoning and communication. This requires practice and consolidation and children should be given the opportunity to work through similar sets of puzzles, problems and questions.
