STATUTORY FL

LANGUAGES IS NOW STATUTORY IN KEY STAGE 2!

Key Guidance

|

All schools should be offering a modern language:

  • across the whole of KS2
  • to all children
  • for approximately 30 - 60 minutes per week
  • in curriculum time
  • which is embedded as far as possible across the curriculum

New National Curriculum Requirements

|

What Does This Mean For Schools?

  • All children throughout Key Stage 2 will be learning a foreign language from  September 2014
  • 30 - 60 minutes a week in curriculum time (*recommended)

It is up to each individual school to decide which language to offer and who will do the teaching. FL is a key element of the New National Curriculum and should reinforce the key approaches to teaching and learning. If this is to happen then Primary Languages has to be an integrated part of children's learning and not a bolt on extra. It should be embedded into the rhythm of the school day and be rooted in best primary practice. Schools should think carefully about which delivery model would best fulfil these requirements.
