MOSAICS

Week 1
We were introduced to the artist, Sharon Kelly.  Sharon shared sketchbooks and ideas about the art partnership project.  We created portrait drawings using charcoal.

Week 2
We looked at the work of LS Lowry.  We wanted to draw people moving so we sat in a circle and started to draw the models in the middle.  We made lots of exciting pictures and lots of friends.  We had fun being models.

Week 3
We wanted to draw our environment just like Lowry did.  We talked about the things which can be made.  Some of our parents and friends work in the factories.  We went out to draw where we live.  We looked at the different shapes and patterns of the bricks and bridges.

Week 4
We visited the Lowry exhibition in Salford, Manchester.  We looked at the paintings with beautiful frames.  We made some of our own pictures using collage.

Week 5
We used Lowry’s style to paint landscape pictures.  Charcoal and chalk were also used to make dark cloudy pictures.

Week 6
We looked at pictures of mosaics.  Sharon brought some mosaics to show us.  We made mosaic pictures using coloured cardboard.  This was a practice before we made the real one.

Week 7
We looked at our environment drawings and decided which mosaic design we would use.  Sharon used a piece of everyones picture to make our design.  We liked it very much but we wanted more cars on it so Sharon changed the design.

Week 8
Sticky back plastic was placed over the drawings and we started to stick on the coloured tiles.  When we moved the picture we could see how the mosaics would look.

Week 9
The mosaics had to be glued to the board using concrete.  It was very messy, heavy and smelled funny.  We placed the loose bits of mosaic into the concrete.  We hoped they were going to look good when they dried.

Week 10
The mosaics were complete and we all liked them very much.  We sanded the frames down and painted them white.  The mosiacs show where we live in Skelmersdale and you can see the roundabouts and our schools.

Beacon’s Mosaic          and          Hillside’s Mosaic

BANNERS (Year 4 from Hillside and Beacon)

Week 1
We met to discuss art and looked at other artists’ work. We created charcoal portraits.

Week 2
We looked at Kandinsky’s pictures.  We created our own patterns, shapes and colours using chalks and pastels.

Week 3
Sharon showed everyone how to mix different colours that we needed to paint the banners.  Joanne helped us to camouflage part of a picture by mixing the same colours.

Week 4
We decided the theme ‘time’ would be used to make our banners.  We had to design caring time, nature time, beginning of time, school time, leisure time, dinnertime, hometime and bedtime.

Banners

Week 5
We practised masking out fabric with masking tape and painting any patternswe liked.  We pulled the tape from the fabric which left white patterns.

 Masking tape patterns

Week 6 – 10
All the banners were drawn and masked out with tape.  We started to paint them during the next four weeks.  We pulled off the tape to show the pictures.  Sharon had to sew them and Joanne and Jimmy helped to put them up in the school hall.  Have a look at the schools’ banners.

SCULPTURE (Year 5 from Hillside and Beacon)

Week 1
We met each other and artist Sharon Kelly.  We used charcoal to create our faces, just like a portrait.

Week 2
We talked about sculptures and ornaments we have in our houses and the environment we live in.  We looked at pictures of sculptures by other artists like Brancusi.  Brancusi made a tower and we will make one like a tent.  We started to draw some ideas.

Week 3 – 5
Printing onto fabric was the first thing to do.  We used fabric paints and pens to draw on more designs and frames around our prints.

Week 6 – 8
We started weaving and sewing onto the fabric.  We could decide what patterns we wanted to draw.

Week 9
We talked about different towers we have seen.  We drew some of them, and our ideas of the tent. Sharon, Joanne, Mrs Newton and Mr Barratt helped to make the tent and towers that we designed.

Week 10
Sculptor Andy Shaw came to talk to us and to show us lots of his sculptures and sketchbooks.  We made crazy creatures out of clay.  Andy likes dogs and angels and he is making a big sculpture of a boat for the canal.

Sharon would like to thank Beacon and hillside children for making this art project exciting.  We have made lots of friends and have learned lots about art. A special THANK YOU for Joanne Newton for all her help throughout this wonderful project!
