Primary ICT : QCA Schemes of Work : Unit 5 : Unit 5F

In this unit pupils learn that devices can be connected to a computer to monitor and measure changes in environmental conditions.They gain an understanding of computer monitoring of external conditions.
This unit links with the ICT key stage 2 programme of study 2b (monitoring events such as changes in temperature) and with the science key stage 2 programme of study Sc1, Scientific Enquiry 2f (making systematic observations and measurements including the use of ICT for datalogging).
Pupils should be able to apply what they have learnt in this unit when working on Unit 6C 'Control and monitoring - What happens when...?'

Monitoring Conditions using a web camera |

This is an alternative approach to monitoring environmental conditions where pupils use a standard web camera to monitor a scene. Any physical change in the scene can be set to trigger an action such as an alarm sound or to take a digital image.

Some activities might be:

taking pictures of birds as as they arrive at a bird table
road traffic monitoring
recording the point at which eggs hatch
recording the construction of a spider's web
monitoring the use of a cat flap to see if other cats/animals are making use of it
monitoring gardens for wild animals, urban foxes for example
how a Venus Fly Trap captures prey
monitoring the school pond to determine if the fish really are being removed by the local heron, or cat ...
