School Self-Evaluation: the Pupil Voice

Surveying pupil opinions offers schools a unique perspective to inform self-evaluation processes and to help focus school improvement planning.
Background to the
The Lancashire PAQ has been used with learners in Y9 and Y11 since 1999, with Y6 and Y7 since 2002, and with Y4 since 2004. The questionnaire was revised in 2004 to take into account the views of various interest groups, including schools, the Community Safety Partnership, Healthy Schools and Leadership projects; and also to link with the 2003 inspection framework. Additional questions were added in 2006 to cover the new Every Child Matters agenda. The Lancashire Pupil Attitude questionnaire is an enjoyable, quick and user friendly way of gathering childrens views on a range of diverse issues which inform school self-evaluation. The questionnaire seeks the views of pupils on aspects such as their engagement in learning, their attitudes to school, social interaction, behaviour, and Assessment for Learning.
Using the Questionnaire
Pupils are asked a total of sixty questions, each with four possible responses (two positive, two negative). Questions are arranged in random order so learners respond to each on its own merits, but they can be grouped thematically for analysis; for example: Opinions about school; Support from teachers; Interest in school work and confidence; Attitudes to school work; Social interaction; Attitudes out of school; Assessment for Learning.
Questionnaires are completed from mid-March to mid-May. Originally, questions were set in a re-useable booklet, with pupils entering their responses onto a multi-choice OMR sheet (pre-printed with pupil details provided electronically in advance by schools). Learners names and personal details are not collected on their response sheet to ensure confidentiality, but a bar code on the form allows analysis of results by gender and by ability. Sheets were then returned to the Professional Support Team for processing and analysis.
From 2008, an online version of the questionnaire is also available for use with primary and secondary schools and sixth forms. In order to complete the questionnaire, pupils need to have access to the internet. Once completed, schools can instantly access an initial breakdown of pupil responses to each question by year group and gender.

The questionnaire is completed annually, online, is very competitevely priced and pupils from any year group 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 can take part.

The questionnaire is administered in schools across several authorities, so reports show results for the school, the local authority and for all project schools (in all authorities taking part). Data are analysed by overall response, by gender and by ability band (based on key stage test scores).
The reports include charts and visual prompts to assist with analysis: highlighting and summarising responses that differ significantly from the Project as a whole; using graphs to illustrate trends over time and gender differences. Reports are provided electronically to facilitate 'cut & paste' into presentations and other reports.
