Parental Questionnaire



Schools have always valued the views of parents and carers, and have over a number of years used various ways to informally and formally consult them. However, in 2005, Lancashire identified a need for a more formal mechanism for consultation with parents/carers. A working group developed a manageable model for all schools; schools from all phases took part in this development, including each school involving groups of parents in discussion consultation groups.

After a period of trial and development, the Lancashire Parental Questionnaire was established in autumn 2005. The project has been provided as a marketed service to all primary, secondary, special and short stay schools, for 11 years.


Schools use the Lancashire Parental Questionnaire results to inform their self-evaluation processes and to help focus their school improvement planning. A number of years ago we introduced a narrative report which provided evidence for your self evaluation.  This was extremely well received by schools, and although the SEF itself has now ceased to exist, we have been asked by many headteachers to continue to provide a narrative analysis to inform the self-evaluation process, with the analysis aligned with the Ofsted schedule.  The results suggest how parents/carers are likely to represent the school to relatives, friends and the local community. It allows schools to compare the views of parents/carers with other schools across the Authority in an objective manner, as the analyses are analysed using percentile ranking and highlighting of upper and lower performance. It also allows the adviser/SIP the opportunity to discuss the use of surveying stakeholders views with a school, as part of their self-evaluation processes.
