THE LAUNCH OF UK MUSEUMS AND HERITAGE WEBSITE

EXPERIENCEHISTORY.CO.UK

 

Experience History is a new online platform for UK museums and heritage sites to promote themselves for free.

Experience History will help museums and heritages sites across the UK to reach wider audiences online. The website features a breakdown of museums and heritage sites across the UK by region, a what’s on section, and blog which features guest articles from museum and heritage professionals and reviews of exhibitions and events.

Editor, Alex Peters said ‘We hope that the museums and heritage sites around the UK will help us to build our online community and encourage more people to engage with the UK’s culture and history.

‘We are at an interesting time for cultural organisations in terms of utilising digital media effectively and making sure that they are reaching audiences in the right places.

Experience History provides a place to promote culture in the UK, and also for museums to share an insight from a different angle by writing guest articles and providing new perspectives on their particular institution.’

CLEAPSS: Supporting Practical Science and Technology in Schools & Colleges

CLEAPSS have circulated a Health & Safety warning to be drawn to the attention of all local authority art, technology and science advisory staff and directly to schools if appropriate, about the use of Plaster of Paris in making body casts for sculptural purposes. This follows a serious accident in an art lesson where a young girl was mixing Plaster of Paris with water intending to make a cast of her hand. The mix became very hot as it solidified, causing serious burns resulting in amputation. Temperatures exceeding 60 degrees centigrade can be generated. Safety data sheets supplied with the product warn about making casts but such warnings may be lost or not appear on small samples intended for laboratory use. Teachers and pupils should be warned of the dangers of using Plaster of Paris and avoid skin contact. CLEAPSS have produced a guidance leaflet PS72 'Using Plaster of Paris in Schools' which gives the background to the accident and advises on safe use of the material. By 2008 every primary and secondary school in England and Wales will have its own Learning Platform (DfES).

Learning Platform (LP) is a generic term used to describe a range of integrated web based applications. These can include web pages, email, message boards, text and video conference, shared diaries, online social areas, as well as assessment tools.

 

Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and Managed Learning Environments (MLEs) are part of the same family of applications.  Find out more from:

"Nurturing Creativity in Young People' is the report that follows the Creativity in Schools Review, which was led by Paul Roberts, Director of Strategy at IdEA (Improvement and Development Agency). New Primary Magazine

Primary Magazine

Primary First is a new magazine for all primary teachers. It is published by NAPE. The first edition explores issues of creativity and includes a welcome from Sir Ken Robinson. The magazine covers all aspect of primary education (ie is not an art or an arts magazine) but will take a stance which is close to teachers and to innovation and creativity. Primary Art and Design Courses at the British Museum

Primary Art and Design Courses
The Association for Advice and Support in Art and Design (A4) and the British Museum are running a series of one-day training courses aimed at non-specialist primary art and design co-ordinators. Teachers will be able to develop useful personal skills - essential for the effective implementation of the art curriculum - and make cross curricular links with other areas of learning. All A4 and British Museum courses offer teachers the opportunity to develop essential skills and understanding in Art and Design whilst embracing the Every Child Matters framework. The course activities make full use of the British Museum's rich collection of artefacts from different countries and cultures. New QCA Publication

New QCA Publication: 'Teacher Assessment Activities Art and Design, Key Stage (1, 2 or 3)

Each of these three packs has an introduction to assessment and three case studies. These materials provide examples of assessment activities to illuminate, inform and encourage teachers as they develop their own practices. the packs contain examples of formative and summative practice and the principles of assessment for learning. Some case studies show how teachers have responded to issues of transition between phases of education. The packs are called 'Teacher assessment activities Art and design, Key Stage (1, 2 or 3).

iNET invites educators in all countries to participate and submit resources to engage in the question:

At the heart of this online conference series are students, their needs, and how educators can re-think current practices to ensure deep and effective learning in a knowledge society.
